Roles

Discord roles are useful for several reasons. For server administartors, it can provide a way to lump several people into groups with additional server permissions, like allowing moderators to provide some additional support For normal users, it can help control the amount of information you see, ensuring information you want to see isn't drowned out by information you're indifferent towards or outright don't want to see.

There are two main ways to set or un-set a role. How this process is done depends on which setup the server administrators decide to use.

Roles via Discord Bots

Many servers use Discord bots to automatically assign roles. These are often in their own chanels, usually something like #roles , #bot-roles , or a similar name, often near the top of the channel list..

Find the appropriate channel and either hit the buttons or react to the message to add that role. Click on the button again or remove the reaction to remove the role.

Note- some bots provide a response (either in channel or direct message) when you add or remove a role, and some do not. You can always check your server profile to see if the role has been added.

Also, roles are not maintained if you leave and re-join a server. You may have to (un)react to a role message and then react again to properly re-add the role.

Roles via Onboarding

If the server you joined has set up onboarding (setup guide incoming eventually!), it is possible to have roles added and removed via onboarding questions.

Onboarding is normally done when initially joining a server. However, you can access onboarding questions at any time by going to Channels & Roles in the server's channel list. The onboarding questions appear under the Customization Questions section of the Customize tab.

Note that in this method, Discord does not provide indication that roles were removed. You will only see a notification if you add (or remove and readd) a customization option which sets a server role. Changing these settings will also affect which channels you see if Show All Channels is not enabled (which will also be addressedon another page.).
