Considered a runt even by her race's standards, Astarra's diminutive size was often the target of her peers' gnomish curiosity when she was young.  To sate the constant questions from her peers, her origin would constantly get more and more embellished with each response.

Aging towards adulthood, curiosity turned to teasing.  In response, her answers also transformed into darker, sarcastic retorts and "ancient curses" she claimed were fed to her by ancient spirits which only she could commune with.

Little did she know, these curses were not just clipped from her imagination.  A few phrases pierced the veil and drew attention of otherworldly creatures.  She learned of this when one form, known to her only as Zazyx the Slight, began whispering to her nightly.  Zazyx had suffered a similar fate in his realm, and nightly commiseration led to a quick bond.

Many nights later, Zazyx brokered a deal.  He would provide her power, as her deeds would bring about the recognition Zazyx needed.  Exactly how they correlate is still unclear to Astarra, but it didn't matter.  Tired of her peers and with a new-found purpose, she set off in the cover of night to find a way to make her mark on the world.
